The Positives of Negative Ions

Syft Technologies have just announced a breakthrough in SIFT-MS technology by adding four negatively charged reagent ions to their Voice200ultra instrument and Vaughan Langford, Syft Technologies Applications Director, will be available alongside Anatune at the forthcoming BMSS Annual Meeting to discuss this new development.

In addition to the three positive reagent ions (H3O+, NO+ and O2+) already available, four negative reagent ions, O, O2, OH and NO2, have now been introduced. This advance from three to seven switchable reagent ions, will provide SIFT-MS with even greater selectivity and compound choice.

All seven reagent ions are generated by microwave discharge through dry or moist air – there is no need for reagent gas bottles or other hazardous ion sources. With four negative reagent ions available, this now opens up the possibility of real-time, part-per trillion analysis of compounds that were previously inaccessible with positively charged reagent ions.

New applications include greenhouse gas analysis – such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide – as well as photochemical smog precursors (ozone, PAN and NOx) and sulphur hexafluoride, used in tracer gas analysis. There is also enhanced fumigant detection capabilities and analysis of acid gases such as HF, HCI and SO2 .

If you are at BMSS this year – between the 15th and 17th September – and are interested in this exciting new development, please visit us at the Anatune booths, numbers 15 and 16.   Alternatively, please call the office on 01223 279210 or email We look forward to hearing from you soon.
